The 4 C's Disected-Part 4-Cut

Cut is what I think is the most important of the 4 C’s.  Usually people refer to cut as just the shape of the diamond.  That is only part of it.  Each diamond shape has specific proportions that make it sparkle.  If a diamond is cut too shallow or too deep, the light doesn’t hit the facets right and the diamond ends up looking dull.

You could have the clearest, whitest, biggest diamond, and if it isn’t cut well, it doesn’t look good.

Any diamond that has been graded has a grade for the cut.  Usually this grade of the Good, Very Good, Excellent variety and doesn’t mean a whole lot.  In this day and age when people buy diamonds online, these classifications aren’t much to go by, but they’re all we have.  I personally, when buying online would only buy something with Excellent cut.

The problem with this plan is that if you are buying a stone shape other than round brilliant, the cut grade can also comment on the length to width ratio.  This is fine if you want a truly square stone or a perfectly proportioned rectangle.  I recently bought a emerald cut stone for a customer and it had heavy cut corners which meant that the cut would not have had a very good grade.  The stone was still stunning and I thought it was actually prettier than a regular emerald cut because the faceting came further into the stone and made it sparkle more.

That was just one case, but I think it gets my point across.  The 4 C’s mean nothing if a diamond is pretty and is what you want.  Generally when buying a diamond, sparkle is what you want and I think a good cut is the best way to get that.  Diamond beauty is always in the eye of the person wearing it.
