Mother’s Rings
Since I often get requests for custom designs for Mother’s Rings I thought it would be a good idea to write a post about them–what they are and the pros and cons of having them custom made.
Mother’s Rings have been around forever and are probably never going to go away. A mother’s ring is technically a ring (or you can have a Mother’s Pendant also) that has the birthstone’s of all of a mother’s children. That’s it. Simple right? Not so much.
There are a lot of jewelry design “rules” that have to be broken to accommodate a woman’s specific stones. Women do not have children based on what number of stones will look good in a ring or what colors look good together. This is where a custom designer comes in handy. Most jewelry stores can put together a mother’s ring for a customer but it may not be elegant. Large jewelry stores generally do not have the time or expertise to really create custom mother’s rings. They will often have a tray of options that use different numbers of stones but they usually do not have a lot of options for each number of stones. They also do not always have the time to find shades of stones that work well together.
Gemstones all have their ideal colors but that doesn’t mean that those colors are what a customer wants or what will work best in a mother’s ring with other stones. For example, sapphire which is the birthstone for September comes in every color of the rainbow (except red–red sapphires are rubies.) If a traditional blue sapphire does not work with the other stones in a mother’s ring, you can always try another color of sapphire. Many months have multiple stones that are considered birthstones for that month. December has 3 common stones–tanzanite, blue zircon, and blue topaz. All are blue, but they are different shades and give a customer a lot of options as far as matching the other stones in the ring.
The other thing about what most jewelry stores have to offer for mother’s rings, is that the designs are often old fashioned and aren’t always what a client wants to wear everyday. A custom mother’s ring allows a woman to consider the over all design as it relates to her own sense of style not just how many stones she wants to fit into the ring.
The “plus” of going to a large jewelry store and buying a mother’s ring, is the price. Generally they rings they have are light weight, mass produced designs, and do not cost as much as a custom piece. But keep in mind when buying any piece of jewelry, if you spend $100 dollars on a ring that you won’t wear everyday because you don’t love it, that’s a waste of $100.
