Finally, A Diamond Pricing Gauge!!

As a young person in business today, I try to use the social media, blogs, etc. to learn about what is going on in my industry. I have blog so it is only fair that I read other people’s blogs and today I found something really interesting!

One blog I read is the “Jewelry Expert” blog at http://jewelryexpert.wordpress.com and yesterday they had a post about diamond retail prices http://jewelryexpert.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/diamond-suggested-retail-price/. I figured it was going to be one person’s opinion about how to buy a diamond and what the pricing should be–nothing too scientific. It turns out, there is a new website out there for consumers to tell them based on the color, clarity, shape, and carat approximately what they should pay per carat. The site is http://www.idexonline.com/DRB.asp.

I tooled around in the site for a little while and it was kind of neat. In order to access a lot of the sites tools you have to be a member and I did not want to sign-up (I have some of my father’s cynicism) but I could put in specific qualifications for a diamond and get it to tell me the price per carat. They only have round or fancy for shapes so you can’t specify if you are looking at a marquis cut or an emerald cut but it does give you an idea.

I haven’t bought diamonds in an actual retail setting much at all so I can’t say if the pricing is super beneficial since pricing depends so much on the place you are buying the diamond but it does give a consumer a top price that they should ever pay for a stone based on that stone’s specific qualifications. I’m super excited that is tool is out there for consumers!
