Exercise, Good for your Body, not your Jewelry

I admit, I am one of the people who will put on makeup before I go workout and will skip a workout if I don’t have a cute, clean outfit to wear, but I always take my jewelry off before I get sweaty.

The best thing for your jewelry is to never wear it to avoid wear and tear.  Since that isn’t practical since we buy jewelry so we can wear it, I beg you, please at least take your jewelry off when you do housework, dishes, or exercise.  Gemstones actually have a very slight magnetic charge that attracts dust which is why they seem to get dirty so incredibly fast.  I know the phrase is “A diamond is forever” and that may be true, but jewelry is not forever.  Gold, silver, platinum, and pretty much any other metal that your jewelry is made of (there may be a few exceptions that I don’t know about) is not going to last forever if you aren’t at least a little careful.  Every time you polish a gold ring, the polishing process actually removes a little bit of gold which over time can completely deplete your jewelry.  So the more you scratch your jewelry and therefore have to get it polished,  the shorter its lifespan.  And of course, rings are the worse offenders since it is so hard to avoid scratching up something you wear on your hand.

I admit, I don’t take off all of my jewelry when I exercise.  I do keep all of my earrings in and sometimes I will leave a necklace on if it is small and isn’t likely to bother me.  Let me tell you how dirty my earrings are.  I wear plain diamonds stud earrings and I probably should clean them at least once a week because they get so dirty.  The dirt on your jewelry is a combination of soap scum, lotions, skin cells and who knows what.  Because I never take my earrings off even in the shower, they get very dirty.  My pendant that I wear every day is usually much cleaner because I usually take it off when I exercise and before I shower and really only put it on if I am leaving the house.  Rings are the hardest.  I usually take my rings off if I’m doing anything around the house and I always take them off when I exercise.  Because I am careful, my rings stay cleaner and shinier than a lot of my friends’ rings.

When you exercise, you are sweating all over your jewelry and you can really scuff your rings on weights or machines.  Please, it hurts my heart to see women wearing jewelry, especially their rings that they treasure and want to be able to wear forever, when they exercise.  Find a safe place like your purse or inside your wallet to put your jewelry and please reduce the damage you are doing to your jewelry when you exercise.
