Apatite–yes it’s a gemstone.

Apatite is a stone that you don’t often hear about. It’s a super pretty aqua color usually and could be a really popular stone, but it’s a really soft so it doesn’t lend itself to jewelry very well because it’s fragile. Don’t get the wrong idea, you can absolutely put apatite in jewelry, but you have protect it and when you wear it you have to be careful.

I have one apatite stone in my collection. I bought it because it was a very similar color to paraiba tourmaline but for a fraction of the price. I designed a pendant for this stone specifically. I got the idea for the metal “cup” around the apatite from a friend who had an opal that she didn’t want to bezel set but that she wanted to protect within her mounting. I used aquamarine’s in this pendant because I thought the color would compliment the apatite and aquamarines are much less expensive than diamonds.

Other ideas for setting apatites would be bezels or partial bezels if you trust your jewelry not to chip your stone. Or, you can set it however you want if you are putting your apatite in a pendant or earrings since those types of jewelry suffer less wear than rings and bracelets.

I’ve seen apatite more in the last few years in high end colored stone jewelry lines so keep an eye out for this amazingly beautiful stone!
